Dr. Penny Regier, ACVS

    Dr. Regier joined Oklahoma Veterinary Specialists after her time at University of Florida (UF) College of Veterinary Medicine as a tenured Professor of Soft Tissue Surgery.  She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and is an ACVS Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Small Animal Soft Tissue Fellow.  She is a graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine where she received the ACVS Surgical Proficiency Award, the Dean Clarence H. McElroy Award – the highest honor awarded to a veterinary student, and the Gentle Doctor Award – awarded to a veterinary student that demonstrates character, clinical ability, leadership, and dedication to the delivery of excellent patient care. Dr. Regier then competed a one-year internship in Small Animal Medicine & Surgery at Colorado State University (CSU), where she then stayed to complete her Master of Science degree and a three-year residency in Small Animal Surgery.  Following her residency, Dr. Regier was a Professor of Soft Tissue Surgery at UF where she was awarded tenure for her teaching and research achievements.  Dr. Regier’s major research interests focused on soft tissue surgery, primarily gastrointestinal surgery, tissue viability, and vascular blood flow. Other research interests focused on brachycephalic airway syndrome, laryngeal paralysis, MIS, and other aspects of gastrointestinal surgery.  Dr. Regier has over fifty publications in several top-tier journals, including JAVMA and Veterinary Surgery, and has authored several book chapters in veterinary surgery textbooks.  She has presented her research at several international conferences, taught and coordinated numerous course lectures at UF, and has also been invited to present at several continuing education events.  She is currently the President of the Society of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery (SVSTS) and is an active member of ACVS and SVSTS.

    Dr. Regier grew up in a military family and moved around all over the states before her family eventually settled in Oklahoma where she grew up with a brother, two sisters, and plenty of pets.  She obtained her undergraduate degree in Zoology from Oklahoma State University and worked as a marine biologist at the Oklahoma Aquarium before pursuing veterinary medicine.  Dr. Regier and her husband, Jake, are both graduates of OSU and are excited to be back in Tulsa near friends and family.  They have a little girl, Aven, and baby boy, James, that keep them busy, as well as three cats (Bast, Newt, and Fig).  Dr. Regier enjoys reading, spending time outdoors (kayaking, hiking), ice skating, Disney, traveling, and spending time with her family.
